Possible Causes

Low ambient temperature, Restricted airflow due to dirty filter or coils, Low refrigerant charge, Faulty defrost sensor or control

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit before defrosting. Do not chip ice with sharp tools; this can puncture the coil.

Steps:

  • Defrost: Turn the unit off and allow all ice to melt completely. Place towels under the unit to catch water.
  • Clean filter and coils: Wash the air filter and vacuum the evaporator and condenser coils.
  • Check room temperature: Ensure the unit is used in a room above the minimum operating temperature (usually 5°C / 41°F).
  • Inspect defrost sensor: Verify the evaporator/defrost sensor is properly attached to the coil and functioning (see E3/E7 procedures).
  • Professional service: If icing recurs despite good airflow and proper temperature, the sealed system may be undercharged or the compressor may be weak; contact a refrigeration technician.
