Dehumidifier displays E5 and shuts down shortly after starting

Safety: Unplug the unit. Allow the compressor to cool for at least 30 minutes before further inspection.

Steps:

• Check ambient conditions: Ensure the dehumidifier is used within the specified temperature range (typically 5–35°C / 41–95°F). Move the unit to a warmer room if used in a cold basement or garage.
• Inspect airflow: Clean the air filter and ensure the intake and exhaust grilles are not blocked. Maintain at least 20–30 cm (8–12 in) clearance around the unit.
• Check evaporator for ice: Remove the front panel and inspect the evaporator coil. If heavily iced, allow the unit to defrost completely, then restart. Persistent icing may indicate a sensor or refrigerant issue.
• Compressor thermal protector: If the compressor is very hot to the touch (only check after unplugging and waiting several minutes), the internal overload may be tripping. Verify the fan is running properly to cool the system.
• Sensor check: Verify the evaporator and ambient sensors are properly attached and reading correctly (see E2/E3 procedures). Replace any faulty sensors.
• Professional service: If E5 persists with proper airflow and sensors, the compressor or sealed system may be at fault and requires a qualified refrigeration technician.
