Possible Causes
Stuck or burned compressor relay on main PCB, Shorted compressor winding, Damaged wiring to compressor, Faulty current-sensing circuit on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. The compressor circuit carries high voltage and current; if you are not experienced with electrical testing, contact a professional.
Steps:
- Visual inspection: Remove the rear or side panel to access the compressor and main control PCB. Look for burnt marks or melted plastic around the compressor relay on the board.
- Check wiring: Inspect the wires from the control board to the compressor terminals and overload protector. Tighten any loose spade connectors and replace any burnt or brittle wires.
- Compressor test (advanced): With the unit unplugged, remove the compressor terminal cover and disconnect the wires. Measure resistance between the compressor terminals (C-R, C-S, R-S). Values should be finite and not shorted to ground. A short to ground or open winding indicates a failed compressor.
- Relay replacement: If the compressor tests good but the relay is visibly damaged or does not click when the unit tries to start, replace the main control PCB (relay is usually integrated).
- Do not bypass safety devices: Never bypass the overload protector or relay. This can cause fire or compressor damage.
