Possible Causes

Blocked condenser coil, Failed fan motor causing poor airflow, Dust-clogged air passages, Faulty high-temperature sensor or thermal fuse

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit and allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes. Do not operate if there is a burning smell.

Steps:

  • Clean thoroughly: Remove the front and rear panels. Vacuum dust from the condenser coil (warm coil), fan blades, and air passages. Clean the air filter with mild soap and water; dry completely.
  • Check fan operation: Spin the fan blade by hand (with power disconnected). It should rotate freely without grinding. If stiff or noisy, the fan motor may be failing.
  • Power-on test: Reassemble, plug in, and run the unit. Confirm the fan starts immediately when the compressor is commanded on. If the fan does not run, replace the fan motor assembly.
  • Inspect thermal sensor/fuse: Some Bionaire units use a thermal fuse or thermostat attached to the condenser or compressor. If open, the unit may show E8 or shut down. Test continuity and replace if open.
  • Stop using if overheating persists: Continued E8 errors with a hot smell indicate a serious fault; discontinue use and seek professional service.
