Dehumidifier emits a burning or electrical smell

Critical safety warning: If you smell burning plastic or see smoke, unplug the unit immediately and do not use it until inspected. Fire risk is possible.

Steps:

• Visual inspection: With the unit unplugged, remove the cover and inspect the fan motor, compressor terminals, and main control board for burn marks or melted insulation.
• Check fan motor: If the smell is strongest near the fan, and the motor is very hot to the touch, replace the fan motor assembly.
• Inspect wiring: Repair or replace any burned wires or connectors using proper crimp terminals and high-temperature wire.
• Board damage: If the main control board is charred, replace the main control board.
• Do not operate: Do not continue using the unit until the source of the smell is corrected.
