Dehumidifier stops and shows E5, fan may still run

Safety warning: Unplug the unit before removing panels. High voltage is present around the compressor and capacitor; if you are not comfortable working with electrical components, contact a technician.

Steps to troubleshoot E5:

• Ventilation check: Ensure the rear and sides of the dehumidifier are not blocked. Overheating due to poor airflow can cause compressor overload.
• Clean condenser coil: Remove the rear cover to access the warm condenser coil (usually behind the compressor). Use a soft brush or vacuum to remove dust and lint from the fins.
• Inspect the compressor area: Look for burnt smells, melted connectors, or discoloration around the compressor terminals and start relay/PTC device.
• Check the fan operation: Confirm that the fan runs at full speed when the compressor is commanded on. A non-working fan can cause high head pressure and overload.
• Start relay/PTC replacement: If the compressor hums briefly then clicks off, the start device may be failing. Replace the compressor start relay/PTC with a model-specific part for your Black+Decker unit.
• Advanced diagnosis: If E5 persists after cleaning and replacing the start device, the compressor or main control board may be defective. Testing compressor windings and current draw should be done by a qualified technician.
