Possible Causes

Blocked condenser coil, Failed condenser fan motor, Overcharged or undercharged refrigerant system, Faulty high-pressure switch (if equipped)

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit. Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system yourself; refrigerant work must be done by an EPA-certified technician.

Steps a homeowner can take:

  • 1. Clean air filters and coils: Remove and wash the air filter. Use a soft brush and vacuum to clean dust from the condenser (warm) coil. Restricted airflow can cause high pressure and trigger E5.
  • 2. Check condenser fan operation: Plug the unit back in and observe (from a safe distance) whether the fan runs when the compressor attempts to start. If the fan does not run, the compressor may overheat and shut down.
  • 3. Inspect fan area: With power disconnected again, check for obstructions (plastic bags, insulation, debris) blocking the fan blade. Spin the blade by hand; it should turn freely without grinding.
  • 4. Test/replace fan motor: If the blade is free but the motor does not run when powered, the condenser fan motor is likely failed and should be replaced with the correct Carrier motor assembly.
  • 5. Evaluate environment: Ensure the unit has at least 12 inches of clearance around it and is not operating in a confined, overheated space.

When to call a technician: If the fan and airflow are normal but E5 persists, the issue may be refrigerant charge, a blocked capillary/expansion device, or a faulty high-pressure switch. These require a Carrier-qualified refrigeration technician.
