Possible Causes

Low refrigerant charge due to leak, Blocked capillary or expansion device, Faulty evaporator temperature sensor, Faulty pressure sensor (if equipped)

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit. Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system yourself.

Homeowner checks:

  • 1. Verify airflow: Ensure filters and coils are clean and the fan is operating normally. Poor airflow can mimic low refrigerant symptoms.
  • 2. Observe coil behavior: With the cover removed (and using caution around moving parts), briefly run the unit. The evaporator should get uniformly cool. If only a small section frosts or there is no cooling at all, refrigerant issues are likely.
  • 3. Check sensors: Inspect and test the evaporator thermistor as described under E3. A bad sensor can cause EC on some Carrier models.

When to call a technician: If airflow and sensors are good but EC persists, the unit likely has a refrigerant leak or internal restriction. A Carrier-qualified refrigeration technician must locate leaks, repair the system, evacuate, and recharge to factory specifications.
