Dehumidifier shows E5 and will not start the compressor.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit and wait several minutes before touching components near the compressor. Capacitors may hold charge; avoid contact with capacitor terminals.
Steps:
- Check supply voltage: Plug the unit into a known-good outlet (no extension leads). Low voltage can trigger current protection.
- Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear or side panel to expose the compressor and electrical box on its side.
- Inspect wiring: Look for burnt connectors, melted insulation, or loose spade terminals on the compressor, overload protector, and start relay/PTC.
- Test the overload and PTC (if equipped): With a multimeter, check continuity through the overload protector (should be closed at room temp). The PTC relay should not be shorted. Replace any visibly damaged or failed components.
- Replace start components if suspect: Install a compatible Challenge compressor start relay/PTC and/or compressor overload protector for your model, matching the original ratings.
- Reassemble and test: Refit covers, plug in, and run the unit. If E5 persists and the compressor hums then trips, the compressor itself may be mechanically seized.
Warning: Compressor replacement and sealed system work must be done by a qualified refrigeration technician.
