Dehumidifier powers on but compressor never starts (fan only)
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit before accessing the compressor compartment. Capacitors can hold a charge; discharge safely if handling.
- Step 1 – Confirm settings: Ensure the humidity setpoint is below the current room humidity and that the unit is not in fan-only mode.
- Step 2 – Listen for compressor: After turning on, wait a few minutes. A healthy compressor will start with a brief click and then a steady hum. Repeated clicking without running suggests start component issues.
- Step 3 – Inspect start relay and overload (advanced): Remove the rear cover to access the compressor terminals. The start relay and overload protector are attached to the compressor. Check for burnt smell, discoloration, or rattling parts.
- Step 4 – Test components: With a multimeter, test the overload for continuity and the relay for proper operation. Replace with Danby-compatible start components if defective.
- Step 5 – Evaluate compressor: If new start parts do not get the compressor running, the compressor itself may be seized or the control board may not be sending power.
When to call a technician: Compressor and high-voltage diagnostics should be performed by a professional. If the compressor is locked, replacement of the unit is often more cost-effective.
