Dehumidifier runs but does not collect water even in humid conditions
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit before inspecting internal components. Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system yourself.
- Step 1 – Verify humidity: Use a separate hygrometer to confirm the room humidity is above 50%. In dry conditions, little or no water collection is normal.
- Step 2 – Check bucket and drain: Ensure the bucket is installed correctly and that any continuous drain hose is not leaking water elsewhere.
- Step 3 – Inspect evaporator coil: With the cover removed, run the unit for 10–15 minutes and observe the evaporator coil. A healthy system will show even cooling and light condensation across the coil.
- Step 4 – Look for symptoms of low charge: If only a small section of the coil gets cold, or if there is heavy frost on part of the coil while the rest is warm, the system may be low on refrigerant or restricted.
- Step 5 – Evaluate compressor operation: Listen for the compressor running steadily (a low humming sound) and feel the condenser coil for warmth. A cold condenser and no water production often indicate a sealed-system issue.
When to call a technician: Sealed-system repairs (refrigerant leak detection, recharging, compressor replacement) require specialized tools and certification. In many cases, replacement of the dehumidifier is more economical than repair.
