Possible Causes

Open or shorted ambient thermistor, Disconnected thermistor harness, Corroded connector on control board, Failed main control board input circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the dehumidifier before removing any covers or accessing internal wiring.

  • Step 1 – Power cycle: Unplug the unit for 5–10 minutes, then plug back in. If E1 returns immediately, proceed to sensor checks.
  • Step 2 – Locate ambient thermistor: On Danby units, the room temperature sensor is usually near the air intake grille or mounted on the front of the evaporator housing. It is a small probe or bead sensor with two wires.
  • Step 3 – Inspect wiring: Check that the thermistor harness is firmly plugged into the main control board and that there are no cuts, pinches, or corrosion on the wires or connector.
  • Step 4 – Test thermistor (advanced): Using a multimeter set to resistance (ohms), measure the thermistor at room temperature. Typical NTC thermistors will read between 5–50 kΩ depending on design. An open circuit (infinite) or near-zero ohms indicates a bad sensor.
  • Step 5 – Replace if faulty: If the thermistor is defective, replace it with a Danby-compatible ambient temperature sensor. Route the new sensor in the same location and secure it away from moving parts.

When to call a technician: If the thermistor tests good but E1 persists, the control board’s sensor circuit may be damaged and the board will likely need replacement by a professional.
