Possible Causes

Evaporator coil temperature too low, Frost buildup on evaporator, Faulty evaporator thermistor sensor, Restricted airflow across evaporator

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the dehumidifier before removing any covers. Do not operate with panels removed.

What P1 means: On many Danby dehumidifiers, P1 indicates the unit is in defrost mode or that the evaporator temperature sensor has detected a low temperature condition.

  • Step 1 – Power reset: Turn the unit OFF, unplug it for 5 minutes, then plug back in and power ON. Allow 10–15 minutes to see if P1 clears.
  • Step 2 – Check room temperature: Ensure the room is above 5–10°C (41–50°F). Danby dehumidifiers will not operate properly in cold basements or garages.
  • Step 3 – Inspect airflow: Remove and clean the air filter with warm soapy water, rinse and dry completely. Make sure the rear intake grille and front discharge are not blocked by walls, curtains, or furniture (keep at least 12–16 inches clearance).
  • Step 4 – Check for heavy frost: Look through the grille at the evaporator coil. If it is heavily iced, leave the unit unplugged for 1–2 hours to fully defrost, then restart. Persistent icing in a warm room may indicate a sensor or refrigerant issue.
  • Step 5 – Inspect evaporator thermistor (advanced): If P1 appears immediately on startup in a warm room, the evaporator thermistor may be open/shorted. Access the coil area, locate the small sensor clipped to the evaporator tubing, and check its wiring for damage or disconnection. Replacement of the thermistor should be done by a qualified technician.

When to call a technician: If P1 never clears in a warm environment with good airflow, or if the evaporator coil ices up rapidly, the unit may have a sealed-system or sensor failure that requires professional service.
