Possible Causes
Mold or mildew growth on evaporator coil, Dirty water bucket or drain pan, Slime buildup in drain channel, Dirty air filter harboring bacteria
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit. Wear gloves and, if sensitive, a mask when cleaning moldy components.
Steps to remove odors:
- Clean bucket and pan: Wash the water bucket and any accessible drain pan with warm water and a mild bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Rinse thoroughly.
- Clean air filter: Remove and wash the filter with soap and water. Allow to dry completely.
- Disinfect coils: Access the evaporator coil and spray with a non-rinse foaming coil cleaner rated for HVAC use. Follow product instructions.
- Flush drain channel: Use a small brush and a mixture of water and mild bleach to clean the drain channel and hose. Rinse well.
- Dry the unit: After cleaning, run the fan-only mode (if available) for 30–60 minutes to help dry internal surfaces.
Warning: Do not use harsh chemicals that can corrode metal or plastics. Ensure good ventilation while using cleaners.
