Possible Causes
Low ambient temperature, Restricted airflow due to dirty filter or coil, Faulty evaporator temperature sensor not initiating defrost, Low refrigerant charge
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit and allow ice to melt naturally. Place towels to catch water.
Steps to prevent icing:
- Check room temperature: Use the unit only within the recommended temperature range. In very cool basements, consider supplemental heating or a low-temperature model.
- Clean filter and coils: Ensure the air filter and evaporator coil are clean to maintain proper airflow.
- Verify fan operation: Make sure the fan runs at full speed when the compressor is on.
- Inspect evaporator sensor: Confirm the sensor is attached correctly to the coil and functioning (see E3). Replace if defective.
- Professional check: If icing persists despite good airflow and sensor operation, have a technician check refrigerant charge and system performance.
Warning: Do not chip ice with sharp tools; you can puncture the coil and ruin the unit.
