Possible Causes
Dirty evaporator or condenser coils, Low refrigerant charge due to leak, Faulty compressor not pumping, Humidity sensor misreading and cycling compressor off too early
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit before cleaning or inspecting internal parts.
Steps to improve dehumidification:
- Check operating conditions: Ensure room temperature is above 65°F (18°C). Dehumidifiers are less effective in cold rooms.
- Clean air filter and coils: Remove and wash the air filter. Access the evaporator and condenser coils and gently clean with a soft brush and vacuum. Avoid bending fins.
- Verify compressor operation: When the unit calls for dehumidification, listen for the compressor starting (a deeper hum) and feel for warm air from the exhaust. If the fan runs but the compressor never starts, see compressor-related faults (E6).
- Check for frost pattern: After 15–20 minutes of operation, inspect the evaporator. If only a small section is cold or frosted, the system may be low on refrigerant and require professional service.
- Confirm humidity setting: Set the target humidity lower (e.g., 40%) to force the unit to run longer. If it still cycles off quickly, the humidity sensor may be misreading and should be tested or replaced.
Warning: Do not attempt to add refrigerant yourself; sealed system work must be done by a qualified technician.
