Possible Causes
Undersized dehumidifier for room size, Excessive moisture load (leaks, open windows), Humidity sensor out of calibration, Air leaks around doors or windows
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Ensure the unit has adequate clearance and is not overheating.
Steps to improve performance:
- Check room size: Compare the dehumidifier's capacity (pints per day) to the room size and moisture level. A small unit may not handle a very wet basement.
- Reduce moisture sources: Fix plumbing leaks, cover open sump pits, and avoid drying clothes indoors.
- Seal air leaks: Close windows and doors; seal obvious gaps that allow humid outdoor air in.
- Verify humidity sensor: Compare displayed humidity to a separate hygrometer. If the unit reads much lower than actual, the sensor may be faulty and should be replaced.
- Consider additional units: In very damp or large spaces, using two dehumidifiers may be necessary.
Note: In extremely humid conditions, continuous operation can be normal until the environment stabilizes.
