Possible Causes

Failed evaporator temperature sensor (coil NTC), Sensor dislodged from evaporator coil, Damaged sensor wiring harness, Faulty main control board sensor input

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit before removing covers or touching internal components.

Steps to correct E3:

  • Access the evaporator: Remove the front or rear panel (depending on model) to expose the evaporator coil (cold coil). The evaporator sensor is usually clipped or taped to the coil tubing.
  • Check sensor placement: Ensure the sensor is firmly attached to the coil surface. If it has fallen off, reattach it using the original clip or aluminum tape so it makes good thermal contact.
  • Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor wires back to the main control board. Look for chafing, cuts, or loose connectors. Repair or secure as needed.
  • Measure resistance: Disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance at room temperature. Compare to the expected NTC value (often similar to the ambient sensor). A reading of 0 Ω or infinite indicates a defective sensor.
  • Replace sensor: If resistance is out of spec or intermittent when the sensor is gently flexed, replace the evaporator temperature sensor.
  • Control board diagnosis: If a new sensor and good wiring still result in E3, the main control board is likely at fault and should be replaced.

Warning: Avoid bending or puncturing the refrigerant tubing on the evaporator coil. Damaging the sealed system requires professional repair.
