Possible Causes
Mold or mildew on evaporator coil, Dirty air filter, Standing water in drain pan, Contaminated drain hose
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. Wear gloves and a mask if sensitive to mold.
Steps to remove odor:
- Clean filter: Wash the air filter thoroughly with warm, soapy water and let it dry.
- Clean coils: Remove the front panel and gently clean the evaporator coil with a coil cleaner approved for aluminum fins. Rinse lightly if the product requires it, avoiding electrical parts.
- Disinfect drain pan: Access the internal drain pan and wipe it with a solution of water and mild household disinfectant. Rinse and dry.
- Flush drain hose: If using continuous drain, disconnect and flush the hose with a bleach solution (then rinse) to kill mold.
- Run on fan-only: After reassembly, run the unit on fan-only mode for 30 minutes to help dry internal surfaces.
