Possible Causes

Failed electronic humidity sensor, Loose or corroded humidity sensor connector, Damaged sensor harness in control panel, Faulty main control board humidity input circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power before opening the control panel. Do not touch live circuits.

Steps to address E3:

  • Power cycle: Unplug for 5 minutes, then plug back in. If E3 returns, continue.
  • Access control panel: Remove screws securing the top/control bezel. Carefully lift the panel to expose the display board and main control board.
  • Locate humidity sensor: On many GE dehumidifiers the humidity sensor is either integrated into the control board or is a small separate module on a 2–3 wire harness located behind the front grille or in the air intake path.
  • Inspect connections: Check the harness from the humidity sensor to the main board. Ensure connectors are fully seated and free of corrosion or moisture.
  • Clean intake area: Dust and lint on the sensor can cause errors. Use a soft brush or compressed air to gently clean around the sensor and intake grille.
  • Replace sensor or board: If the sensor is a separate module and shows physical damage or corrosion, replace it with a GE-compatible humidity sensor. If the sensor is integrated into the main control board, the entire board will need replacement if E3 persists.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall the control panel, restore power, and test operation by setting a low humidity level to force the unit to run.

Tip: If the unit still reads obviously incorrect humidity (e.g., 20% in a damp basement) after repair, the humidity sensing circuit is still faulty and the control board may need replacement.
