Possible Causes

Locked or seized compressor, Failed compressor start relay or PTC, Shorted compressor windings, Faulty main control board compressor drive circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit. Compressor and related wiring carry high voltage; if you are not experienced, contact a technician.

Steps to address E7:

  • Allow cool-down: If the unit has been running, let it sit unplugged for 30 minutes to cool the compressor and reset any internal overload.
  • Check ventilation: Ensure the rear and sides of the dehumidifier are not blocked. Poor airflow can cause overheating and E7.
  • Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear or side metal panel to expose the compressor, capacitor, and wiring (on some GE models this area is partially enclosed).
  • Inspect wiring and components: Look for burnt wires, melted connectors, or a bulging run capacitor. Replace any obviously damaged components.
  • Listen for compressor: After reassembling and plugging in, listen when the unit tries to start. A loud hum followed by a click and E7 suggests a start component or compressor issue.
  • Replace start components: If accessible, replace the compressor start relay/PTC and run capacitor with GE-specified parts. These are common failure points.
  • Further diagnosis: If E7 persists after new start components, the compressor itself may be locked or the control board may be misreading current. Compressor replacement and sealed-system work must be done by an EPA-certified technician.

Warning: Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system yourself.
