Possible Causes
Blocked air intake or exhaust grille, Failed fan motor or fan capacitor, Dirty evaporator and condenser coils, Faulty high-temperature sensor or thermal fuse
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. Let it cool for at least 20 minutes before working on it.
Steps to address E8:
- Check airflow: Make sure the front intake and rear exhaust grilles are not blocked by walls, curtains, or dust buildup. Maintain at least 6 inches clearance around the unit.
- Clean filter: Remove and wash the air filter with mild soap and water. Let it dry completely before reinstalling.
- Clean coils: Remove the front grille and carefully vacuum dust from the evaporator coil. Access the rear condenser coil (if exposed) and clean with a soft brush or vacuum.
- Inspect fan operation: With the cabinet reassembled, plug in and run the unit. Confirm that the fan starts and runs at full speed. If the fan is slow, noisy, or not starting, the fan motor or its capacitor may be failing.
- Check temperature sensor: If accessible, inspect the high-temperature sensor or thermal fuse near the compressor or condenser coil for loose mounting or damaged wiring.
- Replace faulty parts: Replace a failed fan motor, fan capacitor, or high-temperature sensor with GE-compatible parts. If E8 persists after restoring airflow and replacing suspect components, the main control board may be misreading temperature and require replacement.
Note: Persistent overheat errors can also indicate a refrigerant issue; consult a professional if basic cleaning and fan repair do not resolve E8.
