P1
GE Appliances
Defrost Mode / Coil Protection Active
Dehumidifier displays P1 and does not start dehumidifying

Possible Causes
Evaporator coil temperature too low, Room temperature below operating range, Frost buildup on evaporator, Faulty defrost sensor reading low temperature
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Understanding P1: On many GE dehumidifiers, P1 indicates the unit is in defrost mode or protecting the coil. This can be normal in cool rooms.
Steps to address P1:
- Check room temperature: Ensure the room is at least 65°F (18°C). Dehumidifiers do not work well in cold spaces and may stay in P1.
- Allow defrost cycle: If the unit has been running in a cool, damp area, let it sit powered on for 10–20 minutes. The fan may run while the compressor is off to melt frost.
- Inspect for icing: Remove the front grille and filter. If the evaporator coil is iced over, turn the unit off and let it thaw completely. Improve room temperature and airflow.
- Clean filter and coils: A dirty filter or coil can cause low coil temperature. Clean the filter and gently vacuum dust from the evaporator.
- Sensor check: If P1 never clears even in a warm room with a thawed coil, the defrost/evaporator sensor may be misreading. Inspect and replace the sensor if necessary.
Note: P1 by itself is usually not a failure code; it indicates a temporary operating mode. Persistent P1 in a warm room suggests a sensor or control issue.
