Dehumidifier displays E1 and will not start or stops shortly after starting.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the dehumidifier before removing any panels. Do not work on the unit while it is connected to power.
Steps to check and address E1:
- Power reset: Unplug the unit for 5 minutes, then plug back in and try again. If E1 returns, continue.
- Locate the room temperature sensor: Remove the front or side grille (on most GE dehumidifiers it is clipped near the evaporator coil or air intake). Look for a small probe sensor (often with white or clear wires) clipped to the coil or in the air stream.
- Inspect the sensor and wiring: Check for broken, pinched, or disconnected wires going from the sensor to the main control board. Reseat any loose connectors firmly.
- Check sensor resistance (if you have a multimeter): With the unit unplugged, disconnect the sensor from the board and measure resistance across the sensor leads. Compare to a typical NTC thermistor curve (e.g., ~10kΩ at 77°F/25°C). If it reads open (infinite) or 0Ω (short), the sensor is bad.
- Replace the sensor if defective: Order a compatible GE room/ambient temperature sensor for your exact model. Clip the new sensor in the same location and route the wires as originally installed, then reconnect to the board.
- If sensor tests good: The fault is likely on the main control board. Inspect the board for burnt spots or corrosion. If present, replace the main control board.
If you are not comfortable testing electrical components, contact a qualified appliance technician.
