Possible Causes
Evaporator coil sensor detecting abnormal temperature, Severely iced-up evaporator coil, Low refrigerant charge or sealed system issue, Faulty control board defrost logic
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before inspection. Do not attempt sealed system (refrigerant) repairs unless you are EPA-certified.
Steps to address E4:
- Allow full defrost: Turn the unit off and unplug it. Let it sit for 4–6 hours in a warm room to melt any ice on the evaporator coil. Place towels under the unit to catch drips.
- Check airflow: Clean the air filter thoroughly with water and let it dry. Vacuum dust from the intake and exhaust grilles. Poor airflow can cause coil icing and trigger E4.
- Inspect the evaporator coil: Remove the front cover and look at the coil. If it ices up quickly when running, there may be a refrigerant or sensor issue.
- Verify evaporator sensor placement: Ensure the coil temperature sensor is firmly clipped to the coil and not hanging loose. A loose sensor can misread and cause E4.
- Restart and test: After cleaning and defrosting, plug in and run the unit. If E4 returns quickly and the coil does not get evenly cold, the sealed system may be undercharged or restricted.
- When to call a professional: If E4 persists after cleaning, defrosting, and verifying the sensor, contact a qualified technician to check refrigerant charge and sealed system components.
