Possible Causes
Overheated compressor due to dirty coils or poor ventilation, Failed compressor overload protector, Faulty compressor windings, Control board misreading compressor current
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. The compressor and surrounding metal parts may be hot; allow them to cool before touching.
Steps to address E5:
- Improve ventilation: Ensure the dehumidifier has at least 12 inches of clearance on all sides and is not placed against a wall or in a confined closet.
- Clean condenser coil and filter: Remove the rear or side panel to access the warm condenser coil. Use a soft brush and vacuum to remove dust. Clean the air filter and reinstall.
- Check ambient temperature: GE dehumidifiers are typically designed for operation above ~41°F (5°C). Operating in very hot or very cold rooms can trigger protection codes.
- Inspect compressor wiring and overload: With power disconnected, remove the compressor terminal cover. Check the overload protector and wiring for burns or loose connections. Replace a visibly damaged compressor overload protector.
- Test run: Reassemble panels, plug in, and run the unit. If E5 returns quickly and the compressor is not starting or is extremely hot, the compressor or control board may be failing.
- Professional service: Compressor and sealed system repairs require a licensed technician. If basic cleaning and ventilation do not resolve E5, schedule service.
