Possible Causes
Evaporator coil temperature too low, Unit operating in a very cold room, Frost buildup on evaporator coil, Faulty evaporator temperature sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Note: On many GE dehumidifiers, P1 is a normal indication that the unit is in defrost mode, not a failure.
Steps to address P1:
- Allow defrost cycle to complete: Leave the unit plugged in and powered on. The fan may run while the compressor is off. P1 should clear automatically within 10–20 minutes.
- Check room temperature: Ensure the room is above the minimum operating temperature (typically 41°F / 5°C). Move the unit to a warmer area if necessary.
- Clean air filter and grilles: Restricted airflow can cause the coil to get too cold. Wash the filter and vacuum dust from the intake and exhaust.
- Inspect for heavy icing: If the coil is completely iced over, turn the unit off and unplug it. Allow it to thaw completely, then restart.
- If P1 never clears: The evaporator sensor may be misreading. Follow the E2 steps to inspect and, if needed, replace the evaporator temperature sensor.
