Possible Causes
Overheated compressor due to dirty condenser coil, Failed compressor overload protector, Faulty compressor start relay, Low voltage or power supply issues, Failing compressor motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit. Capacitors and compressor terminals can hold charge; avoid touching exposed electrical contacts.
- Allow cooling time: If the unit has been running continuously, let it sit unplugged for 30–60 minutes to allow the compressor to cool. Then plug in and test.
- Clean condenser coil: Access the rear or side of the unit to locate the warm condenser coil. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to remove dust and lint from the fins. Ensure the rear grille is not blocked.
- Check ambient temperature: Very high room temperatures can cause compressor overheat. Ensure the unit is used within the specified temperature range and has adequate ventilation around it (at least several inches clearance).
- Inspect fan operation: Turn the unit on and verify that the fan runs at full speed. A weak or non-running fan can cause the compressor to overheat. If the fan is not running properly, see fan-related entries.
- Advanced checks (technician recommended): If E5 persists, a technician should test the compressor overload protector, start relay, and compressor windings with a multimeter. A failing compressor or PCB may need replacement.
