Dehumidifier displays E5 and will not start; sometimes accompanied by clicking from the control board or relay.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. The compressor circuit carries high voltage; only test live circuits if you are trained and equipped.
Steps:
- Ventilation check: Ensure the rear and sides of the dehumidifier have at least 12 inches of clearance and that the air filter is clean. Overheating can trigger E5.
- Cool-down: If the unit has been running continuously in a hot room, unplug it for 1–2 hours to allow the compressor to cool, then retry.
- Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear or side panel to expose the compressor, start relay, and overload protector.
- Inspect wiring and connectors: Look for burnt terminals on the compressor, melted relay housing, or loose wires. Replace any obviously damaged components.
- Test start relay/overload: With power disconnected, remove the relay/overload assembly from the compressor and check for continuity per Honeywell’s specs. Replace the assembly if open or rattling internally.
- Compressor test: Measure resistance between the compressor terminals (C-R, C-S, R-S). If readings are shorted to ground or open, the compressor is failed and the unit is generally not economical to repair.
Note: If you suspect a sealed system or compressor failure, contact a professional; replacing the entire unit is often more cost‑effective.
