Possible Causes

Failed compressor start relay, Faulty start/run capacitor, Open compressor winding, Control board not sending power to compressor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit. Capacitors can hold a charge; discharge safely before handling.

Steps:

  • Listen for clicks: When the unit calls for cooling, you may hear a click from the relay but no compressor hum. Repeated clicking can indicate a bad relay or capacitor.
  • Access compressor terminals: Remove the rear panel and compressor terminal cover. Inspect for burnt connectors.
  • Check relay and capacitor: Remove the start relay and capacitor. Test the capacitor with a capacitance meter; replace if out of spec or bulging. Replace the relay if rattling or burnt.
  • Compressor test (advanced): Measure resistance between compressor terminals. Open or shorted windings indicate a failed compressor.

Note: Compressor replacement on small Insignia dehumidifiers is usually not economical; if the compressor is bad, replacement of the entire unit is often recommended.
