Dehumidifier runs but does not collect water; bucket stays dry
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before opening panels. Do not cut or open refrigerant lines.
Steps:
- Check humidity and temperature: Ensure the room is humid (above ~50% RH) and warm enough (above ~65°F / 18°C). In very dry or cool conditions, little water will be collected.
- Inspect coils: Remove the bucket and front grille. Look at the evaporator coil while the unit has been running for 10–15 minutes. It should be cool and evenly damp or lightly frosted. If it is completely dry and room is humid, cooling is not occurring.
- Listen to compressor: You should hear a deeper humming sound when the compressor runs. If only the fan runs, the compressor may not be starting.
- Clean coils and filter: Clean the air filter and gently clean both evaporator and condenser coils with a soft brush or coil cleaner.
- Check start components (advanced): Access the compressor terminal cover and inspect the start relay and capacitor for burn marks or bulging. Replace with Insignia-compatible parts if defective.
Important: If the compressor runs but the evaporator never gets cold, the sealed system may be low on refrigerant or restricted. This requires a certified technician and is often not economical to repair on small dehumidifiers.
