Possible Causes

Open or shorted ambient temperature sensor (thermistor) on the evaporator coil, Damaged sensor wiring harness to main control board, Corroded or loose sensor connector on control PCB

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the dehumidifier before removing any panels. Do not operate the unit with covers removed.

Steps to check and correct:

  • Power reset: Unplug the unit for 5 minutes, then plug back in and try again. Sometimes E1 can be a transient sensor read error.
  • Access the sensor: Remove the front bucket, then the front grille and filter. Remove the screws securing the front or side panels to expose the evaporator coil and sensor harness (refer to your Insignia model’s service diagram if available).
  • Inspect the ambient sensor: Look for a small probe or bullet-shaped thermistor clipped to the evaporator coil or near the air intake. Check for broken wires, crushed insulation, or corrosion at the connector.
  • Check connections: Reseat the sensor plug on the main control board. Ensure it is fully inserted and not oxidized. If corroded, gently clean with electrical contact cleaner and let dry.
  • Test the sensor (if you have a meter): With the unit unplugged, disconnect the sensor and measure resistance across the two leads. Compare to the resistance chart in the service manual (typical NTC thermistors are ~5–50 kΩ at room temperature). If reading is open, shorted, or far out of spec, the sensor is bad.
  • Replace if faulty: If the sensor is damaged or out of spec, replace it with an Insignia-compatible ambient temperature sensor/thermistor for your exact model. Route the new sensor wiring along the original path and secure it away from the fan blades.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall all panels and the bucket, plug the unit back in, and verify that the E1 code is cleared and the compressor/fan start normally.

When to call a technician: If a new sensor does not clear E1, the main control board may be defective and should be diagnosed or replaced by a qualified technician.
