Possible Causes

Loose or damaged communication harness between user interface and main PCB, Oxidized or bent pins on control connectors, Failed display/control PCB or main control PCB

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit before removing the control panel or back cover.

Steps:

  • Power reset: Unplug for 5–10 minutes, then plug back in. If E6 returns, proceed.
  • Access control boards: Remove the bucket and front grille. Unscrew and gently lift the top control panel. On some Insignia models, the main control board is behind the rear panel; remove screws to access it.
  • Inspect harness: Locate the multi-wire harness connecting the display board to the main board. Check for pinched, cut, or loose wires.
  • Reseat connectors: Disconnect the harness at both ends and reconnect firmly. Ensure no pins are bent or pushed back.
  • Check for corrosion: If you see green/white corrosion on connectors, clean carefully with contact cleaner and a soft brush, then let dry completely.
  • Test operation: Reassemble enough to safely power the unit and see if E6 clears.
  • Board replacement: If E6 persists, either the display board or main control board is likely defective. Replace the suspect board with an Insignia-compatible replacement for your exact model.

Note: Board-level repairs (soldering components) are not recommended for most homeowners; replacing the entire board is the standard approach.
