Possible Causes
Mold or mildew on evaporator coil, dirty air filter, stagnant water in drain pan, contaminated bucket, high dust buildup inside cabinet
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. Wear gloves and a mask if sensitive to mold. Do not spray water directly into electrical components.
Steps:
- Clean filter: Remove and wash the air filter with warm soapy water. Rinse and dry completely.
- Clean bucket: Wash the water bucket with a mixture of water and mild detergent or white vinegar. Rinse thoroughly.
- Coil cleaning: Remove the front cover to access the evaporator coil. Lightly spray a non-rinse foaming coil cleaner approved for HVAC use. Allow to work per instructions, then wipe away residue.
- Drain pan: Wipe the internal drain pan with a cloth dampened with a mild bleach solution (do not pour bleach into the unit). Dry completely before reassembly.
- Run on fan-only: After cleaning, run the unit on fan-only mode for 30–60 minutes to help dry internal surfaces.
