Possible Causes
Overheating compressor, blocked condenser airflow, failing fan motor, faulty overload protector, defective main control board cycling logic
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug before inspection. Components may be hot.
Steps:
- Clean and clear: Ensure at least 12 inches of clearance around the unit. Clean the filter and condenser coil.
- Check fan speed: Observe the fan while running. If it is slow, noisy, or stops intermittently, replace the fan motor.
- Temperature check: Carefully feel the compressor shell after shutdown (do not touch bare terminals). If it is extremely hot, the internal overload may be tripping due to stress.
- Allow cool-down: Let the unit cool for 30–60 minutes and try again. Persistent short cycling suggests a failing compressor or control board.
- Service recommended: Have a technician test the compressor, overload protector, and main control board.
