Possible Causes
Overheated compressor due to dirty condenser coil, blocked rear exhaust, failed condenser fan motor, high ambient temperature, failing compressor or internal overload, faulty main control board sensing circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before cleaning or disassembly. The compressor and coils can be hot.
Steps to address E5:
- Improve ventilation: Ensure at least 12 inches of clearance around the unit, especially at the rear exhaust. Do not operate it in a confined closet.
- Clean condenser coil: Remove the rear cover (if accessible) and gently vacuum dust from the condenser coil fins. Use a soft brush; do not bend the fins.
- Check fan operation: Power the unit briefly and confirm the fan runs whenever the compressor is commanded on. If the fan does not run or is noisy/slow, the fan motor may need replacement.
- Allow cool-down: If the compressor has overheated, unplug the unit for at least 30–60 minutes to allow the internal overload to reset, then try again.
- Persistent E5: If E5 returns quickly, the compressor may be failing or the control board may be misreading its temperature. These conditions generally require a professional to test the compressor and possibly replace the main control board.
