Safety: Turn off and unplug the unit before investigating noises.

Steps:

Identify noise source: Remove the front or rear cover and briefly run the unit (keeping hands clear) to locate whether the noise comes from the fan or compressor area.
Fan issues: If from the fan, unplug again, then check the fan blade for cracks, looseness on the shaft, or contact with the housing. Tighten or replace the fan blade or fan motor assembly as needed.
Foreign objects: Remove any debris caught in the fan or near the coils.
Compressor mounting: If the noise is from the compressor, inspect the compressor mounting bolts and rubber grommets. Tighten loose bolts and replace perished rubber mounts.
Persistent grinding: Worn fan motor bearings require replacement of the fan motor assembly.
