Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay or PTC, Faulty main control PCB relay output, Shorted compressor winding, Loose or burnt compressor wiring connector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. High voltage is present around the compressor and relay area when powered.
Steps:
- Visual inspection: Remove the rear or side panel to access the compressor compartment. Look for burnt marks on the relay, wiring, or PCB.
- Check compressor connector: Ensure the 3‑pin compressor connector is firmly attached and not heat-damaged.
- Test start relay/PTC (if separate): With the unit unplugged, remove the start relay/PTC from the compressor terminals. Shake it gently; if it rattles or shows burn marks, it is likely faulty and should be replaced with a compatible Russell Hobbs compressor start device.
- Measure compressor windings: Using a multimeter, check resistance between the compressor terminals (C‑S, C‑R, R‑S). Values should be low but not zero, and no terminal should be shorted to the compressor shell (earth). Abnormal readings indicate a failed compressor.
- PCB relay: If the compressor and start device test OK, the main control PCB relay may not be energising. Check for burnt relay contacts or tracks. PCB replacement is usually required if the relay is faulty.
- Professional help: If the compressor windings are shorted or open, the compressor must be replaced by a qualified refrigeration engineer.
