Possible Causes

Open or shorted ambient temperature sensor, Damaged sensor wiring harness, Corroded sensor connector on control board, Failed main control board sensor input

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the dehumidifier before removing any panels. Do not work on the unit while it is connected to power.

Steps to check and address E1:

  • Power reset: Unplug the unit for 5–10 minutes, then plug it back in and try to start it. If E1 returns immediately, continue.
  • Access the control area: Remove the front or top cover (varies by Sunbeam model) by taking out the visible screws. Carefully lift the panel to expose the control board and sensor wiring.
  • Locate the ambient temperature sensor: On Sunbeam dehumidifiers this is typically a small thermistor probe clipped near the air intake grille or evaporator coil, connected to the main PCB with two thin wires (often white or gray).
  • Inspect wiring and connector: Check for broken, pinched, or chewed wires. Ensure the sensor plug is fully seated on the control board. Look for corrosion or discoloration on the connector pins.
  • Test the sensor (if you have a meter): Disconnect the sensor from the board and measure resistance across the two leads. At room temperature (around 20–25°C / 68–77°F), an NTC thermistor should show a stable resistance (often between 5k–50k ohms depending on model). Infinite (OL) or 0 ohms indicates a bad sensor.
  • Clean and reseat: If the connector looks slightly oxidized, lightly clean with electrical contact cleaner, let dry, then reconnect firmly.
  • Replace the sensor if faulty: If resistance is out of spec or intermittent when you gently wiggle the wires, replace the ambient temperature sensor with a Sunbeam-compatible part. Route the new sensor along the original path and secure it with clips or zip ties away from the fan blades.
  • Control board check: If a known-good sensor still gives E1, the main control board’s sensor circuit may be defective. At this point, replacement of the main control board is usually required and is best done by a qualified technician.
