Possible Causes
Shorted evaporator thermistor, Broken sensor lead at evaporator coil, Moisture intrusion in sensor connector, Failed sensor input on main control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before opening any panels. The evaporator coil edges can be sharp; wear cut-resistant gloves.
Steps:
- Reset attempt: Disconnect power for 10 minutes, then reconnect. If E2 reappears, proceed.
- Access the coil area: Remove the front grille and filter. Remove screws securing the front or side housing to expose the evaporator coil (the cold finned coil behind the air filter).
- Locate the evaporator sensor: On Sunbeam dehumidifiers this is usually a small probe or clip-on thermistor attached directly to the evaporator fins with a metal clip or plastic holder, wired back to the control board.
- Inspect the sensor: Check that the sensor is firmly attached to the coil and not hanging loose. Look for cracked insulation, broken wires, or corrosion at the clip.
- Check the connector: Follow the sensor wires to the control board and ensure the plug is fully seated. Clean any visible oxidation with contact cleaner.
- Test resistance: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the sensor and measure resistance. Compare to the ambient sensor if they are the same part type; they should be in a similar range at room temperature. A reading of 0 ohms or OL indicates a failed sensor.
- Replace sensor if needed: Install a new evaporator temperature sensor compatible with your Sunbeam model. Clip it securely to the coil in the same position as the original to ensure accurate frost detection.
- Reassemble and test: Refit the housing and filter, plug in, and run the unit. If E2 persists with a new sensor, the main control board is likely faulty and may need replacement by a technician.
