Possible Causes
Failed fan motor, Obstructed fan blades, Loose fan motor connector, Faulty fan driver circuit on main control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before touching the fan or internal components.
Steps:
- Check for obstructions: Remove the front grille and filter. Look for debris, plastic, or wiring contacting the fan blades. Clear any obstruction.
- Spin test: With power off, gently spin the fan blade by hand. It should rotate freely without grinding or tight spots. Stiff movement suggests worn bearings or a failing motor.
- Inspect wiring: Access the fan motor by removing the top or rear cover. Verify the fan motor plug is fully seated on the control board and that wires are not pinched or broken.
- Power-on observation: Reassemble enough to run safely. Plug in and turn on. Watch the fan: does it attempt to start, hum, or stay still? A humming motor that does not turn often indicates a seized motor.
- Voltage check (advanced): If you are comfortable and qualified, measure voltage at the fan motor connector when the unit calls for fan operation. Presence of correct voltage with no movement confirms a bad motor.
- Replace fan motor: Remove the fan blade (usually a press-fit or set screw) and unbolt the fan motor from its bracket. Install a Sunbeam-compatible replacement, transfer the blade, and ensure it is balanced and fully seated.
- Control board: If the motor tests good but no voltage is supplied, the main control board fan driver is likely defective and needs replacement.
