Possible Causes
Low refrigerant charge due to leak, Severely clogged evaporator coil restricting heat transfer, Faulty evaporator temperature sensor misreading, Blocked airflow causing abnormal coil temperature
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. Do not attempt to open or recharge the sealed refrigerant system yourself.
Steps:
- Clean filter and coil: Remove and wash the air filter. With the front panel removed, gently vacuum dust from the evaporator coil fins using a soft brush attachment. Do not bend the fins.
- Check airflow: Ensure intake and exhaust vents are clear and that the unit has adequate clearance from walls and furniture.
- Inspect for frost or oil: After running briefly (if it will run), look at the evaporator coil. Heavy, uneven frost or oily residue on tubing can indicate a refrigerant issue.
- Sensor check: Refer to the E2 entry for testing the evaporator temperature sensor. A faulty sensor can falsely trigger E8.
- If E8 persists: Persistent E8 after cleaning and sensor verification suggests a sealed system problem (low refrigerant, restriction, or weak compressor). These repairs require specialized tools and are usually not cost-effective on small dehumidifiers.
- Next step: Contact a qualified refrigeration technician or consider replacing the unit if out of warranty.
