Dehumidifier will not start and displays E1 on the control panel
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the dehumidifier before opening any panels. Do not work on the unit while it is connected to power.
Step-by-step checks:
- Power reset: Unplug the unit for 5–10 minutes, then plug back in and try to start it. Sometimes E1 can be a temporary sensor read error.
- Inspect the ambient temperature sensor: On most TaoTronics dehumidifiers, the room temperature NTC sensor is clipped near the air intake grille or on the evaporator coil bracket. Remove the front or side cover (usually Phillips screws on the back) and locate a small probe or bead-type sensor with two thin wires going to the main PCB.
- Check wiring and connectors: Ensure the sensor plug is fully seated on the main control PCB. Look for broken insulation, pinched wires, or corrosion on the connector. Reseat the connector several times to clean contacts.
- Test the sensor (if you have a multimeter): Disconnect the sensor from the board and measure resistance across the two leads. At room temperature (around 25°C / 77°F), most TaoTronics NTC sensors will read in the 5–20 kΩ range. If the reading is infinite (open) or near 0 Ω (short), the sensor is defective.
- Replace the sensor if faulty: Order a compatible TaoTronics ambient NTC temperature sensor for your exact model. Mount it in the same location and route the wires as originally installed to avoid contact with the fan or sharp metal.
- If sensor tests good: The fault is likely on the main control PCB sensor input circuit. Inspect the board for burn marks or corrosion. If no obvious damage is visible, replacement of the control board is usually required.
When to stop: If you are not comfortable opening the cabinet or testing components with a meter, contact a qualified appliance technician.
