Possible Causes

Defective evaporator NTC sensor, Sensor dislodged from evaporator coil, Damaged sensor harness, Failed sensor input on main control PCB

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit before removing covers. Sharp metal edges are present around the coil area; wear cut-resistant gloves.

Steps:

  • Reset the unit: Disconnect power for 10 minutes, then reconnect and test. If E2 returns immediately, proceed.
  • Locate the evaporator sensor: Remove the front or side housing to access the evaporator coil (the cold aluminum finned coil). The evaporator NTC sensor is usually clipped or taped directly to the coil tubing or fins with a small metal or plastic clip.
  • Check sensor placement: Ensure the sensor is firmly attached to the coil and not hanging loose. If it has fallen off, reattach it securely using the original clip or aluminum tape rated for refrigeration use.
  • Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor wires back to the main PCB. Look for cuts, pinches, or melted insulation. Confirm the connector is fully seated on the board.
  • Test the sensor: With the sensor unplugged, measure resistance with a multimeter. Compare to the ambient sensor reading at the same temperature; they should be similar. An open or shorted reading indicates a bad sensor.
  • Replace if needed: Install a new TaoTronics evaporator NTC temperature sensor if the original is defective. Route the wires away from the fan blades and moving parts.
  • If sensor is OK: The main control PCB may not be reading the sensor correctly. Inspect for board damage and consider replacing the main control PCB.
