Possible Causes

Overheated compressor due to blocked airflow, Failed compressor start relay or PTC, Faulty compressor thermal protector, High ambient temperature or poor ventilation around unit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit. The compressor and surrounding components can be very hot; allow cooling before touching.

Steps:

  • Allow cool-down: Leave the unit unplugged for at least 30–60 minutes to let the compressor thermal protector reset.
  • Check placement: Ensure the dehumidifier has adequate clearance on all sides (at least 12 inches) and is not placed in a confined space or near a heat source.
  • Clean filter and coils: Remove and wash the air filter. Inspect the condenser coil (warm coil near the compressor) for dust buildup and clean gently with a soft brush or vacuum.
  • Restart test: Plug the unit back in and set it to continuous mode. Listen for the compressor starting after the fan. If E5 reappears quickly, continue.
  • Inspect compressor start components: With the rear panel removed, locate the compressor start relay/PTC and overload protector mounted on the compressor terminals. Check for signs of burning, cracking, or melted plastic.
  • Test/replace start relay and overload: If you have a meter, test continuity of the overload protector and resistance of the PTC. Replace the compressor start relay/PTC assembly and/or thermal overload protector if defective.
  • If E5 persists with good start components and airflow: The compressor itself may be failing or the main PCB may be misreading current/temperature. These are advanced repairs; contact a professional technician.
