Possible Causes
Overheated compressor, Blocked airflow across condenser or evaporator, Low refrigerant charge, Faulty high-temperature sensor or thermal protector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system (compressor and refrigerant lines) unless you are a licensed technician.
- Check placement: Ensure the dehumidifier is at least 8–12 inches away from walls or furniture on all sides. Poor ventilation can cause overheating and E4.
- Clean filters and coils: Remove and wash the air filter with mild soap and water. Let it dry completely. Use a soft brush or vacuum to clean dust from the condenser and evaporator coils.
- Room conditions: Verify the room temperature is within the specified operating range (typically 41–95°F / 5–35°C). Extreme temperatures can trigger protection codes.
- Check fan operation: Turn the unit on and listen for the fan. If the fan does not run or runs slowly, the compressor will overheat. Inspect the fan motor and capacitor (if equipped) for failure.
- Thermal protector: Some TCL models have a thermal protector on the compressor. If it is open due to overheating, allow the unit to cool for 30–60 minutes, then retry. Persistent E4 may indicate a failing compressor or protector.
- Professional service: If airflow is good and E4 persists, the issue may be low refrigerant or a failing compressor. Contact a qualified technician for sealed system diagnosis and repair.
