Possible Causes
Blocked condenser airflow causing high discharge temperature, Dirty coils and filter, Failing compressor drawing excessive current, Faulty compressor overload protector or thermistor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. Compressor and components may be hot; allow to cool before touching.
User-level steps:
- Improve airflow: Ensure at least 12 inches of clearance around the unit. Do not place it against walls or furniture.
- Clean filter and coils: Wash the air filter. Carefully vacuum dust from the condenser coil (rear or side) and evaporator coil (front) using a soft brush attachment.
- Ambient temperature: Avoid operating in very hot rooms (above manufacturer’s spec). Excessive heat can trigger overload.
- Power reset: Let the unit cool for 30 minutes unplugged, then restart.
Technician-level:
- Check the compressor overload protector and wiring for discoloration or loose connections.
- Measure compressor amp draw; if significantly above nameplate rating, the compressor may be failing.
- If overload or compressor is defective, sealed system service or compressor replacement is required by a professional.
