Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. Compressor terminals carry mains voltage.
Steps to troubleshoot compressor not starting:
- Verify settings: Ensure the humidity setpoint is below current room humidity and that the unit is not in defrost mode.
- Listen for clicks: When the compressor should start, listen for a click from the relay followed by a hum. Repeated clicking without running suggests start component issues.
- Access compressor terminals: Remove the compressor cover and inspect the start relay and overload protector for burn marks or cracks.
- Test start relay and overload: With a meter, check continuity according to Whirlpool specs. Replace any component that tests open or shows signs of overheating.
- Check compressor windings: Measure resistance between the three compressor terminals (C, R, S). Open or shorted windings indicate a failed compressor.
- Control board output: If components and compressor test good, the main board may not be sending power to the compressor. Board replacement may be required.
Test: After replacing start components or board, reassemble and run the unit. Confirm that the compressor starts and the unit begins collecting water.
