Possible Causes

Shorted evaporator thermistor, Open evaporator thermistor, Loose thermistor clip on evaporator coil, Failed control board sensor input

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the dehumidifier before opening the cabinet. Coil fins are sharp; wear gloves.

Steps to resolve E2:

  • Reset attempt: Disconnect power for 5–10 minutes, then reconnect. If E2 reappears, proceed.
  • Access the evaporator coil: Remove the front or rear cover (depending on Whirlpool model). You may need to remove the bucket and air filter first. Take out screws holding the front panel and gently pull it off.
  • Locate the evaporator thermistor: This sensor is usually clipped directly to the evaporator coil tubing or fins, near the center or lower portion of the coil, with two wires leading back to the control board.
  • Inspect sensor and clip: Ensure the thermistor is firmly clipped to the coil and not hanging loose. A loose sensor can cause incorrect readings and E2. Re-clip it tightly to a clean section of tubing.
  • Check wiring: Follow the sensor wires back to the control board. Look for cuts, pinches, or corrosion at the connector. Reseat the connector.
  • Measure resistance: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the thermistor and measure resistance. Compare to Whirlpool service data if available; generally, it should be in the several-kiloohm range at room temperature. Open or short readings indicate a bad sensor.
  • Replace the evaporator thermistor if defective: Unclip the old sensor, route the new Whirlpool-compatible evaporator thermistor along the same path, secure it with the clip, and reconnect to the board.
  • If sensor tests good: The main control board may not be reading the sensor correctly. Inspect for damage and replace the control board if necessary.

Test: Reassemble, restore power, and run the unit. Confirm E2 does not return and that the unit cycles normally.
