How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before servicing. Avoid touching live circuits.
Steps to address E3:
- Power cycle: Unplug for 5 minutes and plug back in. If E3 returns, continue.
- Locate the humidity sensor: On Whirlpool dehumidifiers, the RH sensor is typically mounted behind the front grille near the air intake, or integrated into a small plastic housing with vents, connected to the control board by a multi-wire harness.
- Inspect sensor housing: Remove the front grille. Look for dust buildup, mold, or moisture on the sensor. Gently clean the area around the sensor with a dry, soft brush. Do not soak the sensor.
- Check wiring and connector: Ensure the harness is fully seated on the sensor and on the control board. Look for corrosion or broken wires. Reseat connectors firmly.
- Functional check: If you have access to Whirlpool service data, compare sensor voltage or resistance readings at different humidity levels. If readings are out of range or do not change, the sensor is likely defective.
- Replace the humidity sensor: Remove any screws or clips holding the sensor module. Install a Whirlpool-compatible humidity sensor assembly, route the harness as originally, and reconnect to the control board.
- If E3 persists with a new sensor: The main control board may be faulty. Inspect for damage and replace the board if needed.
Test: Reassemble the front panel, restore power, and set a humidity level. Confirm that E3 is cleared and that the unit cycles on/off based on humidity.
